Michael Cockrem, Ph.D.

Dr. Cockrem has over 25 years of experience in concept and engineering development for scale-up and commercialization of new chemical processes. As President of KiwiChem since 1994, he has had detailed involvement in the technology development for 1,3-propanediol for Tate & Lyle, succinic acid for BioAmber, and many other projects.


Thomas H. D'Alfonso, Ph.D.

Dr. D'Alfonso holds advanced degrees in biological engineering and operations research, statistics, management science, and nutrition. He has >20 years of international experience with leading biotechnology companies: Rhone Poulenc (Sanofi-Aventis) Pharmaceutical in France, Genencor/Danisco in the USA and the UK, and with DuPont in the USA, where he was responsible for the Animal Health and Nutrition business for The Americas and was on the global business unit management team. In 2013 he founded Biomine®, Bio-Informatics Optimization, LLC, specializing in data-driven technology development in the areas of health and nutrition, management software and decision processes, bio-security, quality control and regulatory compliance.

George C. Fahey, Jr., Ph.D.

Dr. Fahey is Professor Emeritus of Animal Sciences and the Kraft Foods Endowed Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he holds the distinction of being named “University Scholar.” Dr. Fahey has an extensive background in dietary fiber, prebiotics, and oligosaccharides. He served on the Panel on the Definition of Dietary Fiber convened by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.


Steve Pollmann, Ph.D.

Dr. Pollmann is uniquely talented and experienced pork industry expert. He has worked in academia doing research, teaching and extension. Additionally, he worked in the feed industry on product development, technical services, quality control programs, diet formulation, and customer support in all livestock species. After about 20 years doing research and sales support, he accepted a general manager position to grow a start-up pork operation in Southern Utah. Because of his successes as the general manager, he was invited to relocate to Iowa to become the Director of Operations and a few years later become the President of the Western Operations for Murphy-Brown LLC, a subsidiary of Smithfield Foods. Steve retired in 2014 and since he wanted to maintain some involvement in the industry, he started DSP Consulting LLC working with several clients with product development needs, pork production support, and team building.


Howard Simmins, Ph.D.

Dr. Simmins is a highly experienced consultant who works in the global farm animal and aquaculture industries. He offers advice in strategic R&D and product development and application, most particularly in sustainable bio-based solutions. 

He has previously held the post of R&D Director for Danisco Animal Nutrition and is also responsible for the financial management of the British Society of Animal Science and the scientific journal animal.


Kristi Smedley, Ph.D.

Dr. Smedley is the owner of the Center for Regulatory Services, and provides regulatory advice to the animal industry as regulated by the Food and Drug Adminstration, USDA, and EPA.  Previously, she served as the Chief for Regulations and Policy Staff, CVM/FDA for the Food and Drug Administration.  Dr. Smedley holds a Ph.D in Animal Nutrition and Forage Science from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
